As I wobbled into l’Hemisphere Gauche on Beaubien Street in Montreal, I was warmly greeted by the French Canadian band members of Sunday Crisp.
I discovered this band by chance while doing an activity in Rosemont-Petite Patrie. During the activity, I heard energetic music and the sound of a large crowd coming from the other side of the railroad tracks.
Intrigued, I crossed the tracks and made my way to Entrepôt 77, and there they were, Sunday Crisp rocking it.
I met with Edwin after the show and he agreed to do an interview with the rest of the band before their next show.
Although I don’t tend to write about music nor bands, I enjoy promoting local people or companies that work hard to achieve their dreams.
So here I am, December 3rd, 2022, in a local bar with people young enough that I could be their mother. As soon as I sat down with Sunday Crisp, that uneasy feeling was swept away by the band’s charisma and I forgot all about the pain from my dislocated disc.
French Canadian Band members of Sunday Crisp
Sunday Crisp is composed of 5 members. They all have sparkling personalities except one who is more of an introvert. But that’s ok, as you need one to keep the band’s feet on the ground.
Dwig Domino (21)
Dwig “Cowbell”, is the most recent addition to the band. He joined the band in 2020. Dressed in a coverall which he has no problem taking off halfway during the show, he is the glue to the band.
He gravitates around the band on stage and adds homogeneity to the group.
His music style is more funk and rock and he grew up listening to Michael Jackson.
He would love to open for the Australian band Skeggs (I had to look it up) which would be perfect for Sunday Crisp. However, on a personal note, he’d like to open for Louis Cole.
Dwig considers himself as the mascot of the group.
Instruments: pianist and percussionist
Nicknames: Cowbell, tamborine, guero
Eddy Lava (23)
Eddy is the lead singer of the group. He also plays the rhythm guitar. His sweetness shines on and off stage.
It’s because of the band Kiss that Eddy discovered his passion for music. As soon as he saw them in concert and mesmerized by Ace Frehley he was hooked. His favourite songs from Kiss are Nothing to Lose and Detroit Rock City.
It would be a dream come true to open for Kiss.
Henry Magma (22)
Henry plays bass and does the back vocals. He is the introvert of the group.
He grew up listening to Weezer and U2. I still haven’t found what I’m looking for is his favourite song. However, just like Eddy, he would love to open for Kiss.
Nickname: Volcano
Edwin Morino (22)
Edwin plays lead guitar and does back vocals. He is the most outspoken of all the band members. According to Dwig, he is the loudmouth of the group.
His music style has been influenced by the Beatles and Elliot Smith and he enjoys funk rock.
He would love to open for The Rolling Stones.
Nickname: Duke, Cadillac
One might wonder why he has such a nickname but it’s because it’s his dream car. Ever since he was a little kid he has been in awe with the bodywork of the car.
Denis Plasma (27)
Denis is the creator behind the music. Not only is he the songwriter but also the drummer. His song writing is inspired by the francophone Canadian band Malajube. He grew up listening to Radiohead and Creed.
Contrary to all the other members of the band, he would love to open for Miley Cyrus.
The origins of Sunday Crisp
All the band members are French Canadian and met in a high school in Sherbrooke in the same music program. It first started with Denis, Eddy and Henry jamming together. Then came along Edwin. They often played Kiss.
The first song they wrote was Man of the Sun.
Eddy then reached out to Dwig in 2020 because they needed a keyboard player.
They then had to come up with a name. Eddy was working in a restaurant and one of his colleagues came up with the name. Sunday Crisp is based on a french canadian expression “Sonne décrisse” which translated means: Ding Dong Ditch. When said fast in French it sounds like Sunday Crisp.
Their songs are all in English because they find it easier to sing that way.
They used the Pandemic to work on their band image and marketing plan. They kept rehearsing multiple times a week via Facetime or Facebook Messenger. It was pretty intense but they are invested in their passion.
Inspiration & Style
The style of music of the band is Pop Rock. The message is simple YOLO. All they want to do is play a good show which they hands down do. Their chemistry on and off stage is undeniable. You can tell that they truly enjoy jamming together.
With catchy tunes, humour and their energy, they captivate their audience.
They have a vintage look on stage partly due to one of their sponsors Super 8, a high-end vintage thrift-store located in Sherbrooke.
I personnally really enjoy listening to the song Bateau Ride. You can listen to some of their songs on Spotify.
What’s next for Sunday Crisp?
Their next show is on December 27, 2022 in Toronto.
Eddy and Dwig also create jingles for ads.
If you get a chance to attend a show of the French Canadian band Sunday Crisp, you’ll bound to have a good time.
